Big Changes Ahead: NZ Visitor Visas Go Fully Digital This September

Planning to bring family to New Zealand, host a tour group, or simply visit yourself? Immigration New Zealand is rolling out a major system upgrade - and the timing matters.

From 24 September 2026, most visitor visa categories will only be accepted through INZ's Enhanced Immigration Online platform. The older portal is being phased out in stages, and by 8 October 2026, any draft applications still sitting unfinished there will be wiped for good.

Here's the rollout in a nutshell: ✅ June 2026: Partner-linked visitor visa categories moved first ✅ 24 August 2026: Group & Tour Escort visas shift online, introducing a brand-new Group Visitor Visa ✅ 24 September 2026: Nearly all other visitor visa types go online-only ⚠️ 8 October 2026 — Unfinished drafts in the old system are deleted permanently

Why it matters: applicants from countries that need a full visitor visa - including India, China, the Philippines and several Pacific nations - face real risk if a draft is left incomplete. Losing a draft means re-gathering documents and starting over, which can be costly if travel dates are already locked in.

The good news? INZ says applications lodged through the new platform are being prioritized while the transition is underway.
