Understanding the New Zealand Visitor Visa Extension

A Visitor Visa extension lets you extend your stay in New Zealand legally beyond your current visa’s expiry date without breaching immigration rules. Every application is reviewed carefully by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) to ensure the applicant remains a genuine visitor and has valid reasons for extending their stay.

Key Rules for Extending a New Zealand Visitor Visa

  • You can stay in New Zealand for up to 9 months in any 18-month period.

  • If you have already stayed for 9 months, you must leave New Zealand and remain outside for at least another 9 months before reapplying.

  • Your application to extend the NZ tourist visa online must be submitted before your current visa expires.
